Peters
and Doria first described the White-Lipped Python as Liasis albertisii in 1878. These authors
examined material collected by the Italian naturalists Odoardo
Beccari and Luigi Maria d’Albertis during an expedition to New
Guinea. Two specimens, one from Kapoar (Onin Peninsula, presumably Fak Fak,
Indonesia) and one from Andai, near Dorei (Manokwari, Indonesia) were described
and designated as syntypes (coll. # MSNG 29989-29990) for this new species.
